The Government of India has appointed Navin Kumar Singh, former Director General of NCIIPC India (a unit of NTRO), as the country’s 4th National Cybersecurity Coordinator (NCSC) — and notably, the first IPS officer to hold this critical position. Singh succeeds Dr. Gulshan Rai, Lt. Gen. Dr. Rajesh Pant, and Lt. Gen. M.U. Nair, who previously steered India’s cybersecurity mission.
During his tenure at NCIIPC, Singh led several high-impact initiatives aimed at enhancing the country’s cybersecurity posture. These include national cyber war-gaming simulations to strengthen IT & OT resilience in energy, telecom, and banking sectors, the rollout of India’s updated national cybersecurity strategy aligning governance, response & recovery, and the NCIIPC–AICTE Pentathon 2024, a key initiative promoting indigenous cybersecurity innovation and talent development.
In his new role as National Cybersecurity Coordinator, Singh will focus on advancing India’s cybersecurity strategy and fostering stronger collaboration among government agencies, private sector players, and global partners. His priorities include:
- Strengthening public–private partnerships against emerging threats.
- Enhancing India’s standing in the Global Cyber Power Index.
- Advancing cyber defense diplomacy and stakeholder coordination to ensure a unified and agile response to threats.
As India faces increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks targeting critical infrastructure, financial systems, and digital services, Singh’s leadership is expected to play a crucial role in shaping a resilient and secure digital ecosystem. His experience in coordinating national-level cybersecurity exercises and policy frameworks positions him well to guide the country’s efforts in building proactive defense capabilities.
A defining moment for India’s cybersecurity leadership, this appointment signals a renewed focus on operational excellence, strategic foresight, and global engagement in safeguarding India’s cyberspace.
