
PhonePe has announced a strategic collaboration with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its suite of consumer and business platforms, including the Indus Appstore. This partnership will allow millions of users to experience ChatGPT’s conversational and problem-solving capabilities for everyday use cases such as travel planning, shopping assistance, and information discovery—signifying a major leap in generative AI adoption across India.
Rahul Chari, founder, whole-time director, and CTO of PhonePe, highlighted the company’s long-term vision for scaling digital services across the nation. He stated that PhonePe has “spent years building the foundational layers for digital services at population scale.” He further added, “This strategic alliance demonstrates that collaborations between innovative companies in this space can help expand the reach of cutting-edge technology to the broader population. We are excited to partner with OpenAI to begin this journey.”
OpenAI’s Head of International, Oliver J., said the partnership aligns with the company’s mission to make AI more accessible globally. “India is a global hub for innovation, and PhonePe’s deep understanding of the country’s fabric and its user base make them the ideal partner,” he said.
The collaboration was unveiled during OpenAI’s DevDay Exchange in Bengaluru, marking the first time ChatGPT will be directly accessible through one of India’s largest digital ecosystems. By bringing generative AI to a familiar platform, the partnership aims to make conversational AI an integral part of users’ daily lives—from simplifying personal tasks to enhancing business interactions.
This initiative not only underscores PhonePe’s commitment to advancing India’s digital transformation but also positions OpenAI at the forefront of localized AI deployment in one of the world’s fastest-growing technology markets. The integration of ChatGPT within PhonePe’s ecosystem is expected to accelerate consumer adoption of AI tools, bridging the gap between innovation and real-world application at scale.
