Nvidia is in discussions to invest up to $30 billion in OpenAI as part of a broader funding round that could value the artificial intelligence startup at a $730 billion pre-money valuation, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The proposed $30 billion investment is separate from the previously announced $100 billion infrastructure agreement between the two companies unveiled in September. That earlier arrangement outlined a structure in which Nvidia would invest in OpenAI over several years as new supercomputing facilities came online.
Under the September framework, Nvidia’s first $10 billion tranche was expected to be deployed once its first gigawatt of computing capacity was completed. However, the newly discussed $30 billion capital injection is not tied to deployment milestones or infrastructure buildout targets, the source said.
While the current discussions are distinct from the earlier agreement, Nvidia could still participate in subsequent funding rounds aligned with the original infrastructure framework.
The $30 billion deal has not been finalized, and terms remain subject to change. A formal agreement could potentially be reached within days, though discussions are ongoing and confidential.
