Google India Appoints Roma Datta Chobey as Managing Director

Roma Datta Chobey has been appointed Managing Director at Google India, marking a significant leadership transition for the technology giant in one of its fastest-growing markets. In her new capacity, she will oversee Digital First Businesses spanning e-commerce, fintech, edtech, gaming, travel, foodtech, SaaS, media, telco and government sectors.

Her mandate centers on accelerating revenue growth, driving key strategic initiatives, and reinforcing Google’s competitive standing within India’s rapidly expanding digital economy. Having earlier served as Interim Country Manager for India, she brings continuity and market familiarity to the role, along with experience navigating complex business environments.

In addition to her corporate leadership, Chobey plays an active role in industry policy and advocacy. She serves as Chairman of the Technology Committee at the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) and is also a Member of its National Steering Committee. Through these positions, she contributes to policy dialogue and collaborative efforts aimed at advancing technology-led economic development in India.

With more than 25 years of professional experience across banking and digital domains, Chobey’s career reflects a strong foundation in financial services and business operations. Before joining Google, she held senior leadership roles at HDFC Bank, Standard Chartered, ABN AMRO Bank N.V., IDBI Bank, and Bank of Punjab Ltd. Across these institutions, she developed expertise in branch banking, sales strategy, and personal banking operations.

Her cross-sector exposure positions her to lead AI-driven digital transformation initiatives and scalable business innovation as India witnesses accelerated digital adoption. The appointment highlights Google’s strategic emphasis on strengthening its presence across high-growth digital verticals, with Chobey expected to guide the company through the next phase of expansion and market competition.
