Anthropic partners with Australia to advance AI safety and track economic impact

Anthropic is set to sign an agreement with the Australian government to collaborate on artificial intelligence safety and monitor the economic impact of AI adoption, marking a significant step in global efforts to regulate and understand emerging technologies. The partnership will focus on sharing data and research insights to better assess how AI is transforming industries, jobs, and overall economic activity.

Under the agreement, Anthropic will provide its economic index data to help track how AI is being adopted across different sectors of the Australian economy and its effects on the workforce. This data-driven approach is expected to give policymakers a clearer understanding of how automation and AI tools are influencing productivity, employment patterns, and long-term economic trends.

The collaboration will also include joint research initiatives with Australian universities, along with participation in AI safety evaluations. Anthropic will share insights on the capabilities and potential risks of advanced AI models, contributing to the development of safer and more reliable AI systems. The initiative reflects a growing emphasis on responsible AI deployment as governments and companies work to balance innovation with risk management.

In addition to research and data sharing, the company has indicated plans to invest in Australia’s data centre infrastructure and energy resources. These investments are aimed at supporting the increasing computational demands of AI systems while strengthening the country’s digital infrastructure and positioning it as a hub for advanced technology development.

The agreement aligns with Australia’s broader strategy to promote AI adoption while managing associated risks through existing regulations and voluntary guidelines. Although the country does not yet have specific AI legislation, the government has outlined plans to support innovation, develop workforce skills, and encourage responsible AI use under its national AI roadmap.

This move also reflects a wider global trend, as Anthropic has established similar partnerships with countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan. By expanding its international collaborations, the company is positioning itself as a key player in shaping global standards for AI safety and governance while supporting governments in navigating the economic implications of rapidly advancing technologies.
