Google Maps is rolling out a new artificial intelligence feature that can automatically generate captions for photos and videos, marking another step in the company’s push to integrate AI across its ecosystem. The update is designed to make it easier for users to contribute local content without the need to manually write detailed descriptions.
The feature is powered by Google’s Gemini AI model, which analyzes images selected by users and suggests relevant captions based on the visual content. Once a user chooses a photo to upload, the AI generates a caption draft that can either be used as-is, edited, or completely removed before posting.
This capability is aimed at reducing friction in content sharing, particularly for users contributing reviews, travel photos, or local insights. By providing a ready-made caption, Google is helping users save time while encouraging more frequent and richer contributions to the platform.
Currently, the AI caption feature is available in English for iOS users in the United States, with plans to expand to Android devices and other regions in the coming months. The phased rollout reflects Google’s broader strategy of testing AI features before making them widely accessible.
In addition to caption generation, Google is also improving the overall content contribution experience within Maps. The platform now surfaces recent photos and videos directly in the “Contribute” tab, allowing users to quickly select and upload content from their camera roll.
The update highlights Google Maps’ evolution from a navigation tool into a content-driven discovery platform. With billions of user-generated photos already available, the integration of AI tools like caption generation is expected to enhance both the quality and volume of contributions, further strengthening the platform’s role in local discovery and decision-making.
