OpenAI Launches $230 Codex Micro Hardware Controller for AI Coding Agents

OpenAI has launched Codex Micro, a compact programmable hardware controller designed to help developers monitor and manage AI coding agents operating through its Codex platform. Developed in collaboration with custom keyboard maker Work Louder, the limited-run device is priced at $230 and is being sold through OpenAI’s Supply Co. store while stocks last.

The launch marks OpenAI’s first commercially available branded hardware product, although it is positioned as a specialist developer accessory rather than a mass-market consumer device. Codex Micro is designed to provide physical controls and visual status indicators for developers working with multiple AI agents and coding tasks.

The device features 13 mechanical switches, a joystick, a rotary dial and a touch-sensitive control. Six illuminated “Agent Keys” use live RGB feedback to show the status of Codex agents, allowing users to identify whether an agent is thinking, running a task, waiting for instructions, completing its work or encountering an error.

Users can configure the keys for commonly used Codex actions, including push-to-talk voice prompting, sending commands and accepting or rejecting code changes. The rotary dial can be used to adjust an agent’s reasoning level, while the joystick provides another physical control for navigating or initiating workflows.

Codex Micro is available with either clicky or silent mechanical switches. It also includes a Codex Icon Keyset containing 32 additional keycaps, along with warranty and customer support provided by Work Louder.

The hardware complements OpenAI’s Codex desktop application, which serves as a command centre for running multiple coding agents in parallel, reviewing proposed code changes and managing separate development tasks through individual project threads.

OpenAI has clarified that the Work Louder collaboration is separate from its broader consumer hardware initiative involving former Apple design chief Jony Ive. Unlike that project, Codex Micro is focused specifically on developers and users of OpenAI’s agent-based coding tools.
