
Samsung Electronics has created a dedicated robotics division reporting directly to the chief executive, naming Executive Vice President Lee Dongkun to head the Robotics Strategy Team as the company accelerates development and commercialisation in the sector.
The new RX, or Robotics eXperience, division will oversee Samsung’s mid- to long-term robotics strategy, core technology development and business execution. It will also expand research capabilities in South Korea and overseas. Lee previously led robotics strategy at Hyundai Motor Group, including work connected to Boston Dynamics.
Samsung also plans to establish robotics research hubs in the US, China and Japan, three markets where robotics ecosystems are developing rapidly across industrial automation, humanoid systems, components, sensors and applied AI. The company has positioned robotics as a growth engine and had said during its January earnings call that it aimed to achieve tangible results in humanoid robotics this year.
The move formalises robotics as a CEO-level strategic priority inside one of Asia’s largest electronics and semiconductor companies. Samsung has already indicated it could consider investments and acquisitions where necessary to accelerate development and commercialisation, while also partnering with local companies for technology development.
For India-facing electronics and manufacturing ecosystems, the development is relevant because Samsung has a large operational and market footprint in the country across smartphones, consumer electronics and components. A stronger robotics organisation inside Samsung could influence factory automation, device-manufacturing workflows, service robotics, smart-home hardware and AI-enabled consumer products over time.
The company’s robotics push also reflects a broader convergence between AI, sensors, semiconductors, edge computing and mechanical systems. Robotics is no longer a standalone hardware category; it increasingly depends on model efficiency, perception systems, battery performance, actuators, advanced manufacturing and cloud-to-edge software. Samsung’s control of several parts of the electronics value chain gives it a route to integrate robotics development with chips, displays, appliances and connected-device ecosystems.
The leadership structure is also material. A CEO-reporting unit typically signals that the business is being treated as a cross-company strategic priority rather than a peripheral research programme. With dedicated hubs planned in major robotics markets, Samsung appears to be organising for both technology scouting and commercial deployment.
