YouTube Expands as a Premium Indian Content Platform While Producers Retain IP

YouTube is emerging as a distribution and monetisation platform for premium, long-form Indian programming, giving production companies an alternative to conventional television commissions and subscription-streaming agreements while allowing them to retain ownership of their intellectual property.

Balaji Telefilms is the leading current example. The company has agreed to produce five premium original fiction shows comprising approximately 200 episodes. The slate will be made in 4K and distributed globally through YouTube, with advertising and brand partnerships providing the principal monetisation pathways. Ekta Kapoor will oversee the creative direction and Balaji will retain the underlying IP. Balaji’s corporate disclosures list the partnership among its fiscal 2026–27 announcements.

The announced programmes include Haq Se Season 2, Phir Pyar Ki Yeh Kahani Suno and Kehne Ko Humsafar Hai Season 4, with additional titles in development. The arrangement builds on YouTube’s earlier work with Indian film and television creators and reflects broader participation from production houses such as Applause Entertainment and Swastik Productions.

YouTube India managing director Gunjan Soni has placed the platform’s Indian connected-television audience at more than 75 million adults. That scale gives producers access to large-screen viewing without placing programming behind a separate subscription. It also allows long-form content to coexist with the platform’s established mobile and short-video consumption. The September 7 industry assessment details the platform’s connected-TV reach and the expanding slate of premium programming.

Under a traditional commissioned-production model, a broadcaster or streaming service typically finances a programme and controls the distribution arrangement, often retaining significant rights. The YouTube structure transfers more financing and performance risk to the producer but preserves control over the IP, international availability, advertising inventory and possible subsequent syndication. This gives companies an opportunity to extend a programme across seasons, languages, territories and other distribution channels.

Balaji had already identified YouTube-led, advertiser-funded programming and owned IP as part of its digital strategy. Its recent annual disclosures describe continued investment in YouTube and Meta distribution, business-to-business FAST-channel placements, automation and content-life-cycle expansion. The group reports an audience of more than 11 million YouTube subscribers across its presence. Its latest annual-report material also records the earlier move towards hybrid subscription and advertising models.

The initiative does not mean YouTube is adopting the same commissioning structure as a conventional streaming service. Its role is focused on reach, advertising technology, brand monetisation and global availability, while the production company carries creative ownership and develops the property.

The model gives Indian studios a new route between linear television, premium subscription services and short-form social video. Its commercial performance will depend on audience retention, advertising demand, brand participation and whether long-form fiction can sustain repeat viewing at connected-TV scale.
