HSBC has appointed James Patterson as Global Head of Data Analytics for its Corporate and Institutional Banking (CIB) business, following a period in which he led the function on an interim basis.
Patterson announced the appointment on October 8, 2026, marking his move into the permanent leadership position after more than 20 years of experience across different areas of banking and technology.
Patterson began his career more than two decades ago in a customer-facing role before moving across commercial banking, operations, technology and data. His career has given him experience across both banking and technology functions, with data and analytics becoming a central part of his work at HSBC.
Over the past five years, Patterson has been involved in shaping and executing HSBC CIB’s data strategy. During this period, he has worked on modernising the technology estate and developing the foundations required to use data, analytics and artificial intelligence at scale.
In his new role, Patterson will lead HSBC CIB’s global data analytics function. His mandate will include bringing together the bank’s data resources, technology and engineering capabilities and AI to support business and client outcomes.
Patterson said the opportunity is to use HSBC’s data, technology and engineering capabilities alongside AI to create a competitive advantage for clients. He also highlighted the importance of the global team he now leads and expressed his enthusiasm about the work ahead.
Patterson has previously held technology and data leadership responsibilities at HSBC. In 2024, he was identified as Managing Director of Delivery for Wholesale Banking at the bank, where he discussed the role of data virtualisation and data management in banking operations.
More recently, Patterson has been associated with HSBC’s CIB data strategy and has participated in the bank’s data and analytics initiatives. His work has included efforts around data foundations, analytics, data governance and the use of AI across the organisation.
The appointment places Patterson in charge of the global data analytics agenda for HSBC’s Corporate and Institutional Banking business as the bank continues to expand its use of data, analytics and AI across its operations and client-facing activities.
