Alibaba unveils next-generation XuanTie chip to power agentic AI systems

Alibaba has revealed a next-generation semiconductor chip designed specifically to support the emerging wave of agentic artificial intelligence, marking a major step in its push to strengthen in-house hardware capabilities. The announcement, reported on March 2026, highlights the company’s growing focus on building specialized infrastructure to support autonomous AI systems capable of complex decision-making and task execution.

The newly introduced chip, named XuanTie C950, is built using advanced 5-nanometer technology and was unveiled at an internal conference. The processor is part of Alibaba’s broader effort to prepare for the next phase of AI evolution, where systems move beyond passive assistance to actively performing multi-step tasks independently.

According to reports, the XuanTie C950 operates at 3.2 GHz and is based on the open-source RISC-V architecture, which allows developers to customize chip instructions for specific workloads. This flexibility is particularly important for agentic AI applications, where computing systems must handle diverse and dynamic tasks efficiently. The chip has been described as the highest performing RISC-V CPU to date and delivers more than three times the performance of its predecessor, the XuanTie C920.

Alibaba’s semiconductor development is being driven through its T-Head division, which is focused on building chips for both AI training and inference. While the Zhenwu series targets AI model training, the XuanTie lineup is designed for high-performance cloud computing and the execution of agent-based AI workloads. This dual strategy reflects the company’s ambition to control both the software and hardware layers of AI infrastructure.

The move comes amid intensifying global competition in artificial intelligence and semiconductor technologies, particularly between Chinese and U.S. firms. By investing in open-source chip architectures like RISC-V, Alibaba aims to reduce reliance on foreign technologies while accelerating innovation in AI systems tailored to its ecosystem.

This development also aligns with Alibaba’s broader push into agentic AI, where systems are designed to act autonomously across applications such as enterprise workflows, cloud computing, and digital services. As demand for such systems grows, specialized chips like the XuanTie C950 are expected to play a critical role in enabling faster, more efficient, and scalable AI operations.

Overall, the launch underscores a key shift in the AI industry, where companies are increasingly investing in custom hardware to support next-generation intelligent systems.
