Amazon Unveils AI Platform to Streamline Healthcare Administration and Improve Patient Access

Amazon has introduced a new artificial intelligence–powered platform designed to automate routine administrative work in healthcare, aiming to reduce the operational burden on hospitals and clinics while making it easier for patients to access care. The system, developed by Amazon Web Services (AWS), is called Amazon Connect Health and is built to handle many of the repetitive tasks that often consume a large portion of healthcare workers’ time.

The platform uses advanced AI agents to automate processes such as patient identity verification, appointment scheduling, medical history reviews, clinical documentation, and medical coding. By integrating directly with electronic health record (EHR) systems used by hospitals and healthcare providers, the tool can gather and process patient information automatically, helping doctors and administrative staff spend less time on paperwork and more time focusing on patient care.

According to AWS, the technology is designed to function around the clock, enabling patients to schedule appointments, verify insurance details, and confirm doctor availability through natural-language interactions. If a request becomes complex or requires human oversight, the system can seamlessly transfer the interaction to healthcare staff, ensuring that patient support remains accurate and reliable.

A key objective of the platform is to tackle the administrative complexity that many healthcare providers face. Hospital staff often spend a significant amount of time collecting patient information, verifying records across different systems, and managing appointment workflows. By automating these processes, Amazon hopes to streamline operations and improve efficiency within healthcare organizations.

Early deployments of the system have already shown promising results. At UC San Diego Health, which manages roughly 3.2 million patient interactions each year, the platform reportedly saved about one minute per patient call, redirected 630 hours of weekly work from verification tasks to direct patient assistance, and reduced call abandonment rates by up to 30%, with some departments seeing reductions of as much as 60%.

The platform also includes tools that assist clinicians during appointments. With patient consent, the AI can transcribe conversations between doctors and patients, automatically generate clinical notes, summarize medical histories before visits, and create patient-friendly summaries after consultations. These features are intended to reduce the time doctors spend documenting visits while maintaining accurate medical records.

To ensure reliability, the system incorporates multiple safeguards such as evidence mapping, which links AI-generated responses to supporting sources like call transcripts or medical records. AWS says the platform has undergone multi-stage testing and evaluation processes to ensure safety and accuracy before deployment in healthcare environments.

Amazon’s move reflects a broader push by major technology companies to bring artificial intelligence into healthcare systems. As hospitals face staff shortages and rising administrative costs, AI-driven tools are increasingly being developed to automate operational workflows, improve patient engagement, and enhance the overall efficiency of healthcare services.

With the launch of Amazon Connect Health, AWS is positioning itself more deeply within the healthcare technology ecosystem, aiming to help healthcare providers manage growing operational demands while delivering faster and more efficient patient services.
