In a strategic move to expand its oncology offerings, Apollo Hospitals has acquired healthtech startup Onco, sources told, quashing recent rumours around the startup’s shutdown.
The acquisition was finalized in December 2024, although financial details remain undisclosed. “Apollo acquired Onco.com in a transaction that concluded in December 2024. Moving forward, Onco.com will be built by Apollo as part of its oncology plan. Apollo plans to infuse more capital to grow the startup’s business,” said a source familiar with the matter.
Founded in 2016 by Rashie Jain and Dr. Amit Jotwani, Onco operated as a cancer care aggregator, offering personalised guidance from global oncologists to support patients through their treatment journey. The startup also connected patients with hospitals, diagnostic labs, and care providers while offering end-to-end support at various stages of treatment.
Backed by marquee investors including Accel, Rainmatter, and Alteria Capital, Onco had raised $13 million across funding rounds. At its peak, the platform reportedly drew over 25,000 monthly visitors and 1,000 organic patient leads, according to a LinkedIn post by OkCredit CEO Harsh Pokharna, which originally sparked speculation about the startup’s closure.
However, contrary to the shutdown narrative, insiders clarified that the platform was not shuttered, but acquired by Apollo, which has plans to integrate Onco’s offerings into its larger oncology ecosystem.
The acquisition is expected to be officially announced once Apollo completes the demerger of Apollo HealthCo, its pharmacy and digital health arm. The restructuring will result in the formation of Apollo Healthtech, which will house the Apollo 24|7 digital platform and pharmacy distribution verticals.
Following the acquisition, co-founder Rashie Jain has moved on to her next venture, launching Marvix AI, a GenAI-powered platform based in the U.S. that streamlines administrative workflows for clinicians. Meanwhile, Dr. Amit Jotwani has returned to clinical practice and is currently associated with Medicover Hospitals in Hyderabad.
The acquisition underscores Apollo’s growing ambition in tech-driven oncology care, as it continues to make digital and operational bets to strengthen its leadership in India’s healthcare ecosystem.
