Bank of England and major banks assess cyber risks linked to Anthropic’s AI model

The Bank of England, along with other UK financial regulators, is actively assessing potential cybersecurity risks associated with a new artificial intelligence model developed by Anthropic. The move reflects growing concerns about how advanced AI systems could impact critical financial infrastructure and expose vulnerabilities across banking systems.

Officials from the Bank of England, the Financial Conduct Authority, and HM Treasury are holding urgent discussions with the National Cyber Security Centre to evaluate the risks posed by the model. These talks are focused on understanding how the AI’s capabilities could affect core IT systems used by banks, insurers, and financial exchanges.

The concern stems from the model’s reported ability to identify vulnerabilities in widely used software and infrastructure. Regulators fear that while such capabilities could be used defensively to strengthen systems, they could also be exploited by malicious actors to launch sophisticated cyberattacks on financial institutions.

As part of the response, major British banks, insurers, and exchanges are expected to be briefed on the potential risks in the coming weeks. The discussions highlight the increasing urgency among regulators to prepare the financial sector for emerging AI-driven threats, particularly as these technologies become more powerful and accessible.

The situation also mirrors developments in the United States, where similar concerns have prompted high-level meetings between government officials and banking leaders. The coordinated global response underscores how AI-related cyber risks are becoming a key priority for financial stability and regulatory oversight, with institutions seeking to balance innovation with security and resilience.
