ByteDance Adds IP Safeguards Ahead of CapCut AI Video Rollout

ByteDance has strengthened intellectual property protections and safety measures ahead of the global rollout of its AI-powered video generation model within CapCut, as the company seeks to address growing concerns over copyright misuse. The move comes amid heightened scrutiny from global regulators and content creators regarding the use of AI in generating media content.

The new safeguards are being implemented in ByteDance’s latest AI model, Dreamina Seedance 2.0, which enables users to generate and edit videos using text prompts, images, and other inputs. The model is being gradually introduced to CapCut users across multiple markets, marking a significant expansion of the company’s generative AI capabilities in content creation.

A key component of the updated safety framework is the integration of advanced watermarking technology based on the C2PA standard. This allows ByteDance to identify AI-generated content even if it is modified or shared outside its platforms, enabling better tracking and enforcement of misuse. The company has also introduced proactive monitoring systems to detect and prevent intellectual property violations.

In addition to watermarking, ByteDance has imposed restrictions on generating content that uses unauthorized copyrighted material or real individuals’ likenesses. These controls are designed to prevent misuse of the technology and ensure compliance with evolving legal and ethical standards in AI-generated media.

The rollout follows criticism from major entertainment companies, including Hollywood studios, which had raised concerns about AI-generated videos featuring copyrighted characters and actors without permission. The backlash prompted ByteDance to enhance its safeguards and take a more cautious approach to international expansion of its AI tools.

By reinforcing its safety and compliance measures, ByteDance aims to balance innovation with responsibility as it scales its AI video technology globally. The move highlights the broader industry challenge of managing intellectual property risks while advancing generative AI capabilities, particularly in creative sectors where content ownership remains a critical issue.
