China launches global data organisation to shape international standards and cooperation

China has announced the establishment of a new international body aimed at building global consensus on data governance and usage, as the country steps up efforts to play a leading role in shaping the future of the global data economy. The organisation, known as the World Data Organisation, was launched in Beijing and is intended to promote coordinated development and governance of data across countries.

The newly formed body seeks to address the growing fragmentation in global data policies by encouraging collaboration and standardisation among different nations. According to official details, one of its primary objectives is to “break barriers” created by varying regulatory frameworks across countries, helping multinational companies navigate compliance challenges more efficiently and reduce associated costs.

In addition to promoting policy alignment, the organisation will focus on fostering practical applications of data across key sectors such as healthcare, education, and energy. By encouraging real-world implementation of data-driven solutions, the initiative aims to accelerate industrial innovation and support the development of new digital ecosystems globally.
The move comes at a time when global competition over data governance, artificial intelligence, and digital infrastructure is intensifying. Countries and corporations alike are increasingly prioritising control over data flows and standards, making international coordination more complex. China’s latest initiative reflects its broader strategy to influence global digital governance frameworks while promoting its approach to data development and utilisation.

The launch of the organisation also aligns with China’s long-term ambitions to position itself as a leader in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and the broader data economy. By creating platforms for international cooperation and consensus-building, the country is seeking to strengthen its role in shaping the rules and norms that will govern the next phase of global digital transformation.
