Cloudera Reinvents Itself for the AI Era with Hybrid and Private AI Strategy

Cloudera, once synonymous with powering Hadoop and open-source analytics, has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade — evolving into a major player in enterprise AI and hybrid data platforms. “We’ve come a long way from being a company that was powering open source analytics all the way to AI,” said Abhas Ricky, Chief Strategy Officer at Cloudera.
Following its move to go private in 2021, Cloudera rebuilt its foundation around the Cloudera Data Platform (CDP), which now accounts for more than 95% of the company’s annual recurring revenue (ARR). Ricky described the company’s evolution as a story of “product plus capital,” emphasizing how Cloudera has reengineered its architecture to serve a hybrid, AI-powered future.
“The whole story of Cloudera’s differentiation has been, we’re the only game in town for hybrid,” Ricky noted, highlighting the company’s ‘private AI’ approach that allows enterprises to deploy AI workloads seamlessly — whether on the edge, desktop, or cloud. Cloudera has strengthened this strategy through partnerships with NVIDIA and integration of tools supporting retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and observability, paving the way for what Ricky described as “an AI-powered Lakehouse.”
The company’s monetization model has also evolved to align with real-world workload demand. Its new pricing framework, based on Core Compute Hours, ties revenue directly to the consumption of AI workloads, offering a more dynamic and scalable business model.
In India, Cloudera is experiencing one of its fastest growth trajectories globally. “India is one of the fastest growing regions globally,” said Mayank Baid, Regional VP for India and South Asia, identifying government, banking, and telecom as leading verticals. He added that startups like Ola and PhonePe are also leveraging Cloudera’s lakehouse architecture for analytics and scalability. “We are investing heavily in India, both in terms of engineering and sales team,” Baid confirmed.
Summing up Cloudera’s forward momentum, Ricky stated, “If we can help customers do inferencing at a form factor and price point of their choice, that’s a significant advantage.” The company’s focus on hybrid, private AI and consumption-driven models signals a bold new phase in its journey from big data pioneer to AI-era enabler.
