Gautam Adani Unveils Vision for AI-First, Scalable Healthcare Ecosystem in India

Billionaire Gautam Adani has outlined an ambitious plan to build an AI-first, multidisciplinary healthcare ecosystem focused on affordability, scalability, and global best practices. Speaking at the 5th Annual Conference of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery – Asia Pacific (SMISS-AP) in Mumbai, Adani emphasized the urgent need to transform India’s healthcare infrastructure through a system-wide redesign.

Adani, who leads the Adani Group, recalled the Rs 60,000 crore philanthropic pledge his family made in 2022 on his 60th birthday, aimed at advancing healthcare, education, and skill development. “We did not enter healthcare because it lacked momentum. We entered because the momentum was not enough,” he stated. He called for a shift from incremental upgrades to a “revolution rooted in intelligence as well as empathy.”

Citing low back pain as one of India’s leading causes of disability—more common than heart disease or diabetes—Adani remarked, “If we are to carry the full weight of our national ambition, we must first heal the spine of our people.”

He reiterated the Adani Group’s commitment to developing large-scale, integrated medical campuses—termed Adani Healthcare Temples—in Ahmedabad and Mumbai. These 1,000-bed institutions will serve as “world-class, affordable, AI-first healthcare ecosystems” and are being designed with scalability in mind, especially to adapt quickly in response to pandemics or emergencies.

The campuses will also function as hubs for advanced clinical care, research, and education, with guidance from the Mayo Clinic’s global expertise in healthcare innovation and infrastructure. Adani stressed the importance of breaking traditional silos in healthcare and called for a multidisciplinary approach anchored on five principles: integrated care, scalable infrastructure, tech-enabled learning with AI and robotics, investment in nursing and paramedical training, and patient-centric insurance models.

“We are investing in modular, scalable infrastructure of the kind that can expand rapidly in the face of pandemics or emergencies,” he said, urging healthcare entrepreneurs to explore AI-driven spinal diagnostics, robotic care, and rural surgical solutions.

Highlighting the challenges India faces—such as a healthcare workforce far below WHO-recommended levels and a sharp rural-urban divide—Adani concluded, “India cannot rise if her people cannot stand. And her people cannot stand without you. Let us build the backbone of a great nation.”
