Google DeepMind has appointed Jasjeet Sekhon as its new Chief Strategy Officer, strengthening its leadership team as the company accelerates efforts toward developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) in a safe and human-centric manner.
Sekhon joins from Bridgewater Associates, where he served as chief scientist and head of AI. His move marks a significant transition from the finance sector into one of the world’s leading AI research organizations, highlighting the growing convergence of advanced data science, economics, and artificial intelligence.
In his new role, Sekhon will work closely with Demis Hassabis to shape the company’s long-term AI strategy and guide the development of next-generation AI systems. His mandate includes ensuring that advancements in AGI are aligned with safety, ethical considerations, and broader societal benefits.
Sekhon brings a strong academic and research background to the role, having held professorships at leading institutions such as Harvard University, the University of California, Berkeley, and Yale University. His expertise spans data science, political economy, and machine learning, positioning him uniquely to bridge theoretical research with real-world AI applications.
The appointment comes as Google DeepMind intensifies competition with global AI leaders such as OpenAI and Anthropic. The company has been advancing its AI capabilities through innovations like the Gemini models and other cutting-edge tools, while maintaining a strong focus on responsible AI development.
With Sekhon leading strategy, Google DeepMind aims to accelerate progress toward AGI while ensuring that its development remains safe, controlled, and aligned with the goal of empowering humans rather than replacing them. The leadership addition reflects the company’s broader commitment to combining scientific excellence with responsible innovation in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
