Google Expands AI-Powered Search Mode to Five New Languages
Google is significantly broadening access to its AI-powered Search experience, known as AI Mode, by rolling it out in five additional languages—Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, and Brazilian Portuguese. This marks a major step after the feature was limited to English for more than six months. The announcement follows last month’s global expansion of AI Mode in English to 180 new markets, extending availability well beyond its initial launch in the U.S., U.K., and India.

“With this expansion, more people can now use AI Mode to ask complex questions in their preferred language, while exploring the web more deeply,” said Hema Budaraju, VP of Product Management at Google Search, in a blog post.

AI Mode is powered by a customized version of Gemini 2.5 and allows users to perform multimodal, reasoning-based searches—putting it in direct competition with emerging AI search platforms like Perplexity and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search. The experience is designed to handle complex queries, summarize information from multiple sources, and surface context-rich results directly on the search page.

In addition to language support, Google is also testing new agentic features within AI Mode, aimed at making search more actionable. These include the ability to find restaurant reservations, with future updates expected to add support for booking local services and purchasing event tickets. These capabilities are currently part of the “Agentic capabilities in AI Mode” experiment and are available exclusively to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S., priced at $249.99 per month.

Currently, AI Mode is accessed through a dedicated tab and button on the search results page. However, Google appears to be moving toward making AI Mode the default experience for search users. Logan Kilpatrick, group product manager at Google DeepMind, recently hinted at this transition in response to a user post on X, suggesting that Google is positioning AI Mode as the future of search.

With this expansion, Google is signaling its intent to redefine the way users interact with the web—moving beyond simple keyword-based search to a more conversational, AI-first experience that delivers faster, context-aware answers and actions.
