Google has broadened access to its Canvas feature within AI Mode on Google Search, making it available to all users in the United States who are using the platform in English. The tool was initially introduced last year as part of the company’s Google Labs experimental initiatives.
Canvas in AI Mode is designed to help users manage projects, conduct in-depth research and organize information more efficiently. According to a blog post from Google, the feature now enables users to draft documents and even build custom tools directly within the search environment.
Google previously highlighted use cases such as creating study guides by uploading lecture notes and other materials. The system can also convert research content into multiple formats, including web pages, quizzes or audio summaries. This functionality overlaps to some extent with Google’s AI-powered research assistant NotebookLM.
The tool also enables users to transform ideas into functional digital projects. By describing a concept to Canvas, users can generate code that converts the idea into a shareable application or game. The feature can also assist with editing creative writing, reviewing drafts and offering feedback on project development.
Canvas is already integrated into Gemini, where subscribers to Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra have access to the latest Gemini 3 model along with a larger context window of up to one million tokens, enabling more complex project workflows.
With the rollout inside AI Mode on Google Search, the company is introducing Canvas to a much wider audience, including users who may not have previously used Gemini’s capabilities. Google’s massive search ecosystem allows it to place new AI tools directly in front of billions of users, giving it a strategic advantage in the ongoing competition among AI platforms.
To access Canvas, users can open AI Mode in Google Search and select the Canvas option from the tools menu. This launches a side panel where users can gather information from across the web and Google’s Knowledge Graph. For those building apps or prototypes, the interface allows them to test functionality, view the generated code and refine the output through ongoing interaction with Gemini.
The feature enters a competitive space alongside similar tools developed by other AI companies. Platforms such as OpenAI and Anthropic also offer capabilities that help users turn ideas into projects or receive assistance with writing tasks. However, while ChatGPT’s Canvas tool can activate automatically based on the user’s query, the versions from Google and Anthropic’s Claude typically require users to initiate the feature directly.
