Google in Talks with Chinese Firms to Secure Advanced Cooling Systems for Expanding AI Data Centres

Google is reportedly in advanced discussions with Chinese companies, including Envicool, to procure cutting-edge cooling systems for its growing network of AI-focused data centres. The move comes as the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure places unprecedented pressure on data centre operations, particularly in managing the intense heat generated by high-performance computing systems.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Google recently dispatched a procurement team to China to evaluate potential suppliers and explore partnerships. The discussions are focused on sourcing liquid cooling technologies, which are increasingly becoming essential for modern AI data centres. Unlike conventional air-based cooling systems, liquid cooling solutions circulate coolant directly around servers, offering significantly higher efficiency in handling the thermal load generated by AI chips and dense computing clusters.

The urgency behind these talks reflects a broader shift in the technology industry, where AI workloads are dramatically increasing power consumption and heat output within data centres. As companies deploy more advanced processors and GPUs to support large-scale AI models, traditional cooling methods are proving insufficient. Liquid cooling, therefore, is emerging as a critical enabler of next-generation infrastructure, allowing companies like Google to scale operations while maintaining performance and energy efficiency.

Google’s engagement with Chinese suppliers also signals a strategic effort to diversify its global supply chain. Industry insiders note that the company has historically relied on vendors in Taiwan and other regions for key hardware components. However, tightening supply conditions and rising demand have pushed companies to explore alternative sourcing options. By engaging with firms like Envicool, Google aims to secure reliable access to specialized cooling equipment required for its expanding AI ecosystem.

Envicool, founded in 2005, has rapidly grown into a major player in the global data centre cooling market. The company is currently valued at approximately 98 billion yuan, or around $14 billion, and has reported strong financial growth, including a 40% increase in revenue in the first nine months of the year. It specializes in advanced cooling technologies such as coolant distribution units (CDUs) and has been developing customized solutions tailored to the needs of hyperscale clients like Google. To support rising demand, Envicool is also expanding its manufacturing footprint across China, Thailand, and the United States.

The increasing demand for cooling solutions highlights how the AI boom is reshaping not just computing hardware but the entire infrastructure ecosystem. Industry estimates suggest that the global market for AI server liquid cooling systems is expected to exceed $17 billion in 2026, up sharply from $8.9 billion the previous year. This surge is being driven by cloud providers, enterprise AI deployments, and the growing need for energy-efficient data centre operations.

Despite the potential benefits, the discussions also underscore the complex geopolitical landscape surrounding global technology supply chains. With ongoing tensions between the United States and China, collaborations between companies from the two regions remain sensitive. However, the scale and urgency of AI infrastructure development are pushing companies to navigate these challenges to secure the resources needed to remain competitive.

Overall, Google’s talks with Chinese cooling system providers reflect a critical shift in the priorities of the AI industry. As the focus moves from just building powerful models to sustaining them at scale, infrastructure elements such as cooling are becoming as important as the computing hardware itself, shaping the future of global data centre strategy.
