Google Maps is set to receive a major update as Google introduces new artificial intelligence capabilities aimed at making navigation more interactive and informative. The update brings a new conversational feature called “Ask Maps,” powered by the company’s Gemini AI system, along with an upgraded immersive navigation experience designed to give drivers and travellers a more detailed understanding of their routes.
The new Ask Maps feature allows users to ask complex, real-world questions directly within the app using natural language. Instead of typing basic search queries, users can ask detailed questions such as where to find a nearby place to charge their phone, or which public facilities are available at certain times. The AI then analyses available data and provides recommendations based on location, user preferences, and real-time information.
In addition to answering questions, Ask Maps can assist users in planning trips more efficiently. For example, someone traveling to multiple destinations can ask the AI for recommended stops along the route. The system may suggest interesting locations, attractions, or practical stops while also providing estimated travel times and directions. The feature also incorporates insights from real users, including tips on hidden trails or lesser-known attractions.
The AI tool also personalizes suggestions based on a user’s previous activity within the app. Google said the system can consider places users have searched for, saved, or visited in the past. For instance, if a person frequently searches for vegan restaurants, Ask Maps may prioritize similar options when recommending places to meet friends or dine out.
Alongside the conversational AI update, Google is introducing an improved immersive navigation feature designed to provide drivers with a clearer view of their surroundings. The new interface includes a 3D visual representation of buildings, terrain, and infrastructure along a route. This view helps users better understand upcoming turns, intersections, and road conditions before reaching them.
The immersive navigation system also highlights important road details such as lanes, traffic lights, crosswalks, and stop signs. Google says this information will help drivers anticipate complex turns or busy intersections earlier, improving overall road awareness and potentially enhancing safety.
Another improvement includes more natural-sounding voice guidance during navigation. Instead of giving instructions based solely on distance, the app may now provide directions using clearer contextual language. For example, it might instruct drivers to pass one exit and take the next one rather than relying only on numerical distance cues.
The updated navigation system will also explain the differences between alternate routes. Maps may inform users whether one route is faster but includes toll roads or if another option takes slightly longer but avoids traffic congestion. Additionally, the app will alert drivers to real-time disruptions such as road construction, crashes, or traffic delays by combining information from both the Google Maps and Waze communities.
Google said the Ask Maps feature is rolling out to users in the United States and India on both Android and iOS devices, with a desktop version expected in the future. The company believes that integrating AI more deeply into mapping and navigation tools will make travel planning and daily commuting easier, faster, and more personalized for millions of users worldwide.
