Google Unveils Major AI Upgrades for Chrome with Gemini Assistant

Google is giving its Chrome browser a major AI-powered transformation, rolling out new features designed to make browsing smarter, safer, and more productive. According to the company, these updates will shift Chrome’s role from being a traditional web browser to becoming a proactive, context-aware assistant that enhances everyday online experiences.

At the center of this upgrade is Gemini AI, Google’s advanced browsing assistant. Integrated directly into Chrome, Gemini will help users answer questions about online articles, interpret content spread across multiple tabs, and even locate references within YouTube videos. Soon, the assistant will also introduce a feature that allows users to quickly resurface web pages they’ve previously visited, making information retrieval seamless.

The AI update is first rolling out to Mac and Windows users in the U.S. (English-only), with Android and iOS support to follow. Google has further confirmed that Gemini AI will also integrate with its productivity tools such as Docs and Calendar, helping users streamline workflows, organize research, and manage day-to-day tasks more efficiently.

In addition, Google is enhancing the Chrome omnibox—commonly known as the address bar—with an AI Mode. This new capability will let users ask complex, multi-part questions directly in the omnibox, receive context-aware suggestions, and refine queries through follow-ups. For instance, while shopping online, the AI-powered omnibox could suggest queries like “what’s the warranty policy?” based on the page being viewed. While contextual suggestions are already available in the U.S., AI Mode is scheduled to roll out later this month.

Google has also confirmed that regional and language support will expand over time, with desktop users gaining access first, followed by mobile platforms.

Beyond productivity, Chrome’s AI overhaul includes enhanced safety features. The browser will now more securely autofill login credentials, block scam attempts, address compromised passwords, filter spammy notifications, and simplify sensitive privacy permissions. Google disclosed that these AI protections have already helped cut down on scammy notifications on Android by around 3 billion per day.

Looking further ahead, Google is developing agentic AI capabilities for Gemini in Chrome. These will enable the browser to handle multi-step tasks, such as ordering groceries online, while keeping users in control. By managing repetitive steps, Chrome aims to offer a smoother, more efficient browsing experience
