Japan has renewed its commitment to expanding collaboration with India in high-impact and emerging technologies, as Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the G20 Summit in South Africa. Setting a positive and forward-looking tone, PM Modi congratulated PM Takaichi on her new role, while she expressed her condolences for the tragic terrorist attack in Delhi — a gesture that reflected the nations’ close and trusted relations.
During the 35-minute interaction, PM Takaichi highlighted that her government intends to deliver measurable progress under the Japan-India Joint Vision for the Next Decade. She noted that the partnership would advance across multiple domains, including defence, security, economic cooperation, and people-to-people engagement. She underlined her goal to build shared leadership in futuristic sectors, stating her aim to “leverage both countries’ strengths to foster innovation and growth in the areas of critical and emerging technologies, such as semiconductors and AI, and to concretise cooperation in the area of economic security.” In response, PM Modi emphasized India’s strong alignment with this agenda, reiterating his intention to “advance concrete cooperation in these areas.”
Both leaders also reaffirmed the strategic depth and mutual reliability at the core of India–Japan relations. They jointly stressed that the two nations are “valued partners and trusted friends whose strong ties are indispensable for regional and global peace, prosperity and stability.” Their discussion further underscored a shared commitment to maintaining an inclusive and rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific, as they agreed to work closely to promote a Free and Open Indo-Pacific. The two prime ministers also expressed interest in meeting again soon to maintain momentum on key initiatives.
Alongside this bilateral engagement, PM Modi actively participated in several G20 discussions and held meetings with global leaders during his Johannesburg visit on November 22–23, reinforcing India’s continued diplomatic outreach.
With innovation, security and economic resilience emerging as central pillars of cooperation, the latest exchanges signal a strengthened pathway for India and Japan as they navigate the evolving global technology landscape together.
