LG unveils Exaone 4.5 multimodal AI model to power next-generation intelligent systems

LG AI Research has announced plans to unveil its latest artificial intelligence model, Exaone 4.5, marking a significant step forward in the company’s AI development roadmap. The new model is expected to be introduced in the first half of the year as part of LG’s broader strategy to strengthen its position in the global AI ecosystem and expand into advanced applications such as robotics and enterprise solutions.

Exaone 4.5 is designed as a vision-language model, a type of multimodal AI capable of processing and understanding both text and visual data simultaneously. Unlike traditional large language models that primarily focus on text, this advanced system integrates visual intelligence, enabling it to analyze images alongside written information. This capability is expected to unlock more sophisticated use cases across industries that require contextual and real-world understanding.

The model is also expected to be released as an open-weight system, allowing developers and enterprises to access and customize its trained parameters for specific applications. This approach aligns with a growing trend in the AI industry toward more flexible and accessible models, enabling organizations to build tailored solutions while maintaining control over their data and deployment environments.

A key focus for Exaone 4.5 is its role in powering “physical AI,” where artificial intelligence is embedded directly into machines and real-world systems. LG has indicated that the model could serve as the core intelligence for humanoid robots and other automated platforms, particularly within projects such as Korea’s KAPEX initiative. This reflects a broader industry shift toward integrating AI into physical environments beyond purely digital applications.

The development of Exaone 4.5 builds on LG’s earlier advancements in multimodal AI, including the original Exaone model introduced in 2021. With enhanced capabilities in both language and visual reasoning, the latest iteration is expected to play a central role in LG’s long-term vision of creating intelligent, adaptive systems that can operate seamlessly across digital and physical domains. As competition intensifies in the AI space, the launch of Exaone 4.5 positions LG as a key contender in the race to develop next-generation multimodal technologies.
