Matthew Fettig Appointed Chief Investment Officer and Chief Financial Officer at San Diego Foundation

San Diego Foundation has named Matthew Fettig, CFA, as Chief Investment Officer & Chief Financial Officer, expanding his leadership responsibilities as the organisation continues to manage and grow its assets in support of regional philanthropic initiatives. In this dual appointment, he assumes oversight of both investment strategy and enterprise-wide financial leadership, with responsibility for disciplined capital management, long-term financial sustainability, and the alignment of financial governance with the Foundation’s mission-driven objectives.

In his combined role, Matthew is tasked with integrating investment oversight with broader financial operations, ensuring consistency between portfolio management, financial controls, and organisational strategy. This structure is intended to strengthen resilience, transparency, and long-term impact as the Foundation navigates evolving market conditions while maintaining focus on its community-centered mission.

Matthew brings more than two decades of institutional investment experience and has been associated with San Diego Foundation for over 12 years. Prior to this appointment in February 2026, he served as Chief Investment Officer from August 2013 to February 2026, where he oversaw the Foundation’s asset pools and led asset allocation, investment policy development, portfolio construction, and risk management across multiple market cycles.
Before joining San Diego Foundation, Matthew spent more than a decade at Canterbury Consulting in Newport Beach, California, where he advanced through a series of research and leadership roles focused on institutional investing. From September 2009 to September 2012, he served as Director of Manager Research, managing a team of research professionals while continuing to research hedge fund managers and oversee rigorous due diligence processes.

Earlier at Canterbury Consulting, he held the role of Senior Research Analyst from September 2002 to September 2009. During this period, he was responsible for manager due diligence for long-only equity and fixed income strategies from 2002 to 2006 and for hedge fund strategies from 2006 onward, contributing to institutional portfolio construction and manager selection decisions.
Matthew began his career at Canterbury Consulting as an Analyst and Senior Analyst from May 2000 to September 2002. In this role, he worked closely with consultants and institutional clients on investment policy construction, asset allocation, manager searches, and performance reporting, building a strong foundation in investment governance and analytical rigor.

His expanded responsibilities as Chief Investment Officer & Chief Financial Officer position him to bring a unified perspective to investment management and financial stewardship, reinforcing San Diego Foundation’s ability to support long-term philanthropic impact through prudent financial leadership and effective capital deployment.
