
Meta has begun rolling out advanced artificial intelligence systems to handle content enforcement across its platforms, marking a significant shift in how the company moderates harmful content. The move, announced on March 19, 2026, is part of a broader strategy to reduce dependence on third-party moderation vendors while improving speed, accuracy, and scalability of enforcement processes.
The new AI systems are designed to identify and remove a wide range of harmful content, including terrorism-related material, child exploitation, scams, fraud, and illicit activities. Meta said these systems will gradually take on more responsibility once they consistently outperform existing moderation methods, particularly in areas that involve repetitive reviews or rapidly evolving threat patterns.
Early testing has shown promising results. According to the company, the AI systems can detect twice as much adult sexual solicitation content compared to human review teams, while reducing error rates by more than 60%. The technology has also demonstrated effectiveness in identifying impersonation accounts and preventing account takeovers by flagging suspicious activities such as unusual login locations or sudden profile changes.
In addition, Meta stated that its AI tools can identify and mitigate around 5,000 scam attempts per day, highlighting their potential to significantly strengthen platform security. The systems are also expected to improve response times to emerging threats and reduce instances of over-enforcement, where legitimate content is mistakenly flagged or removed.
Despite the increased automation, the company emphasized that human oversight would remain a critical component of the moderation process. Experts and internal teams will continue to design, train, and evaluate the AI systems, while also handling complex and high-risk decisions such as appeals, policy interpretation, and cases involving law enforcement.
The shift also signals a structural change in Meta’s operational model. By reducing reliance on external moderation vendors, the company is moving toward a more in-house, technology-driven approach to enforcement. This transition is expected to lower long-term costs and improve efficiency, while also addressing challenges associated with managing large global contractor workforces.
Alongside these enforcement upgrades, Meta has also introduced a new AI-powered support assistant, which is being rolled out globally across Facebook and Instagram. The tool provides 24/7 assistance for user issues such as account recovery, settings management, and platform guidance, further integrating AI into the company’s ecosystem.
The development comes amid broader changes in Meta’s content moderation strategy over the past year, including reduced reliance on third-party factchecking and a shift toward community-driven moderation models. At the same time, the company continues to face regulatory scrutiny and legal challenges related to user safety and platform accountability.
