Meta introduces AI auto-reply feature for buyer messages on Facebook Marketplace

Meta has introduced a new artificial intelligence feature on Facebook Marketplace that allows sellers to automatically respond to messages from potential buyers. The update integrates Meta AI into the platform’s messaging system, enabling automated replies to common questions such as whether an item is still available, its price, or pickup details. The feature aims to simplify communication between buyers and sellers and reduce the time required to manage marketplace listings.

The new tool works by generating suggested replies using information already included in a listing. When a buyer sends a message, Meta AI can draft a response based on details like the product description, location, price, and availability. Sellers can review and edit the AI-generated message before sending it or allow the system to respond automatically. The goal is to help sellers handle the large number of repetitive inquiries they often receive from potential buyers.

One of the most common questions sellers encounter on the platform is a simple inquiry about availability. Meta’s new AI capability is designed to automatically respond to these repetitive messages, which can quickly accumulate when an item attracts multiple interested buyers. By automating these early interactions, the company hopes to reduce the manual effort required to manage listings and improve the overall buying and selling experience on the platform.

In addition to automated replies, Meta is also introducing AI-assisted listing tools. When a seller uploads photos of an item, Meta AI can analyse the images and generate a draft listing with suggested details about the product. The system can also recommend a price based on similar items being sold in the surrounding area. This feature is intended to make it faster and easier for users to create listings and start selling items online.

Meta is also rolling out AI-generated profile summaries on the marketplace. These summaries provide buyers with quick insights about a seller, including how long they have been on Facebook, their activity on the marketplace, and other credibility indicators. By presenting this information in a concise format, the company aims to build greater trust between buyers and sellers during transactions.

The introduction of AI-powered features on Facebook Marketplace reflects Meta’s broader strategy to integrate generative AI tools across its products and services. By automating routine tasks such as answering buyer messages and creating product listings, the company hopes to streamline online commerce and make peer-to-peer selling more efficient for millions of users around the world.

Industry observers note that these tools signal a growing trend toward AI-assisted social commerce platforms. As artificial intelligence becomes more embedded in digital marketplaces, features like automated communication and intelligent listing creation may become standard tools for individuals and small businesses selling products online.
