Meta to Introduce AI-Powered ‘Quick Recap’ Feature on WhatsApp for Summarizing Unread Messages

Meta is developing a new AI-driven feature for WhatsApp called “Quick Recap,” designed to help users catch up on unread messages quickly and efficiently. According to WhatsApp feature tracker WABetaInfo, the feature is currently under development and was recently spotted in the Android beta version 2.25.21.12.

“Quick Recap” is expected to enhance user experience by providing concise summaries of unread messages across multiple chats. Built on WhatsApp’s earlier message summary feature — which is currently live in the US and offers a summary of unread messages within a single conversation — this new feature aims to streamline message navigation even further. Unlike the earlier version, “Quick Recap” will allow users to select up to five chats at once and receive AI-generated summaries from each, making it easier to manage longer or multiple chat threads.

The feature is particularly useful for users who have been away from WhatsApp and want to avoid scrolling through extensive conversation histories. According to a screenshot shared by WABetaInfo, users will be able to access “Quick Recap” by going to the Chats tab, selecting multiple conversations, tapping the three-dot menu in the top-right corner, and choosing the Quick Recap option. Once selected, Meta’s AI will generate a summary of the unread content from each chosen chat.

Meta assures users that “Quick Recap” has been developed with privacy in mind. “The Quick Recap feature is integrated with Meta’s Private Processing technology,” which uses secure enclaves, end-to-end encryption, and isolated computation. This ensures that neither Meta nor WhatsApp can read the original messages or the generated summaries. “The AI never processes readable data outside the secure enclave, safeguarding content even during summarisation.”

Importantly, this feature is optional and won’t be enabled by default. Users must manually activate it through WhatsApp settings. Additionally, any conversations protected under WhatsApp’s Advanced Chat Privacy settings will be excluded from this functionality.

Currently, “Quick Recap” is still in development and not available to beta testers. However, WhatsApp is expected to introduce it to the beta channel in future updates, followed by a broader rollout to Android users.
