Micron Plans Second Chip Facility at Newly Acquired Taiwan Site

U.S. memory chipmaker Micron Technology is planning to build a second semiconductor manufacturing facility in Taiwan at a site it recently acquired from Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp. The new facility will be located in Tongluo, Miaoli County, an area where Micron has already established significant chip manufacturing operations and research infrastructure.

The planned plant is expected to play a key role in increasing production of advanced DRAM memory chips, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM). These chips are widely used in artificial intelligence systems, high-performance computing, and data center applications. As demand for AI-driven technologies continues to grow globally, semiconductor companies are rapidly expanding production capacity to keep up with the rising need for advanced memory solutions.

Micron confirmed that it has completed the acquisition of the Tongluo P5 fabrication facility from Powerchip, which will serve as the location for the new manufacturing plant. The upcoming facility is expected to be similar in scale and capability to Micron’s existing semiconductor plant in the region and will likely incorporate advanced manufacturing technologies to support next-generation memory chip production.

Construction of the new facility is expected to begin by the end of Micron’s fiscal year 2026. Once operational, the plant will strengthen the company’s global manufacturing network and help support increasing demand from industries such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, automotive technology, and advanced electronics.

The expansion also reflects Micron’s long-term strategy of strengthening its presence in Taiwan, which remains one of the world’s most important semiconductor manufacturing hubs. Taiwan plays a critical role in the global semiconductor supply chain due to its advanced fabrication infrastructure, skilled workforce, and strong ecosystem of technology suppliers.

With AI applications, data centers, and next-generation computing technologies driving rapid growth in the semiconductor market, companies like Micron are investing heavily in new production facilities to ensure stable supply and maintain competitiveness in the global chip industry.
