Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday inaugurated an AI-powered Skill Hub at Pedamynavanilanka, describing it as a blueprint for rural transformation driven by technology, skills, and collaboration. Launched with the support of the Cyient Foundation, the centre aims to position rural communities at the heart of India’s digital and artificial intelligence-led growth. Emphasising the hub’s significance, Sitharaman said, “PMLanka is not a remote village now. It is recognized as a main centre for AI-powered skill training.”
Designed as an AI-based rural skill and livelihood centre, the hub is equipped with smart classrooms, a 40-system computer lab, drone training facilities, AI-enabled tools, and structured digital learning frameworks. The initiative seeks to bridge the urban-rural digital divide by providing access to future-ready skills in emerging technologies, while creating pathways for employment and entrepreneurship in rural areas.
Highlighting the collaborative framework behind the project, Sitharaman noted, “It operates on the premise of how government infrastructure can be leveraged through CSR partnerships to create scalable, inclusive development models.” The Skill Hub reflects a public-private approach where government support and corporate social responsibility initiatives work together to build sustainable, community-focused solutions.
Founder Chairman of Cyient, BVR Mohan Reddy, reiterated the organisation’s commitment to empowering rural communities, stating that such initiatives are critical for enabling wider participation in India’s rapidly evolving digital and AI-driven economy. He underscored the importance of equipping rural youth with advanced skills that align with industry needs and future technologies.
During her interaction with local residents, Sitharaman highlighted the deep connection between the initiative and the community, saying, “I have not adopted the village; rather, the people of the village have adopted me.” The remark reflected the participatory spirit of the project, where local engagement plays a central role in its success.
As part of the event, the Finance Minister also distributed computers to students, reinforcing the role of education in nation-building. She remarked, “Education is the only way to develop a nation. India is gaining more recognition for its best education.”
The inauguration of the AI-powered Skill Hub marks a significant step toward inclusive digital development, positioning Pedamynavanilanka as a model for how rural India can be integrated into the country’s technology-led growth story.
