OpenAI Expands Stargate Project with Five New AI Data Centers in Partnership with Oracle and SoftBank

OpenAI has unveiled plans to construct five new AI data centers across the United States as part of its $500 billion Stargate project, working in collaboration with Oracle and SoftBank. The expansion will push Stargate’s planned capacity to 7 gigawatts (GW), an energy output the company says is enough to power more than 5 million homes.

According to the announcement, three of the new facilities are being developed with Oracle, located in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; and a yet-to-be-revealed site in the Midwest. The remaining two sites are being built in partnership with SoftBank, one in Lordstown, Ohio, and the other in Milam County, Texas.

These data centers are designed to serve as the backbone for OpenAI’s next generation of large-scale AI systems. The company noted that the Stargate expansion reflects its push to train and deploy increasingly powerful AI models while ensuring sufficient compute capacity to meet global demand.

The announcement follows another major development earlier this week: OpenAI disclosed that it had secured a $100 billion investment commitment from NVIDIA. The funding will go toward purchasing the chipmaker’s advanced AI processors and accelerating the rollout of additional infrastructure under the Stargate initiative.

By partnering with Oracle and SoftBank, OpenAI is tapping into established leaders in cloud services and telecommunications to scale its infrastructure ambitions. The sites will be critical for hosting workloads that require massive computing power, from model training to real-time AI applications.

The Stargate project, first announced in January 2025, represents one of the most ambitious infrastructure programs in the technology sector, targeting 10 GW of compute capacity by the end of 2025. With the latest expansion, OpenAI is already on pace to meet this goal ahead of schedule.

The combination of cutting-edge GPUs from NVIDIA and strategic partnerships with Oracle and SoftBank highlights how OpenAI is building a distributed but highly connected network of AI facilities. This massive buildout underscores the company’s belief that the future of artificial intelligence will depend on unprecedented levels of computational scale.
