OpenAI Offers One-Year Free Access to ChatGPT Go in India Ahead of Bengaluru DevDay Exchange

In a major push to strengthen its footprint in India, Sam Altman-led OpenAI has announced that it will offer one year of free access to ChatGPT Go for users in the country who sign up during a limited-time promotional window starting 4 November. The offer comes just days before OpenAI’s DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru, the company’s first developer-focused gathering in India, signaling the growing strategic importance of the market in its global roadmap.

The promotion is open to both new users and existing ChatGPT Go subscribers, with current subscribers automatically receiving an extra 12 months of complimentary access. The initiative reflects OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to make advanced AI tools more accessible to users across different segments in India — from students and professionals to developers and enterprises.

ChatGPT Go, launched in India in August 2025, was designed as a lower-cost subscription plan to meet user demand for more affordable access to advanced AI features. The plan includes higher message limits, image generation, and file upload capabilities, offering a practical, flexible solution for everyday and professional tasks.

OpenAI highlighted that India was one of the first countries to receive ChatGPT Go, underscoring the company’s focus on the region. Within a month of launch, the number of paid ChatGPT subscribers in India more than doubled, prompting OpenAI to extend the plan to nearly 90 markets worldwide.

Describing India as one of its fastest-growing markets, OpenAI said the country has now become its second-largest user base, with millions of developers, students, and professionals using ChatGPT regularly. “This promotion is a continuation of OpenAI’s ‘India-first’ commitment and supports the IndiaAI Mission, reinforcing the growing momentum around AI in India as the country prepares to host the AI Impact Summit next year,” the company said in an official statement.

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, expressed enthusiasm about the platform’s rapid adoption in India. “Since launching ChatGPT Go in India a few months ago, the adoption and creativity we’ve seen from our users has been inspiring,” Turley said. “Ahead of our first DevDay Exchange event in India, we’re making ChatGPT Go freely available for a year to help more people across India easily access and benefit from advanced AI.”

The initiative not only strengthens OpenAI’s engagement with India’s digital and AI ecosystem but also aligns with the country’s broader ambition to lead global AI innovation through accessibility and inclusion.
