OpenAI Reportedly Planning 1 GW Data Center in India Under Stargate Initiative
OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed artificial intelligence company and creator of ChatGPT, is reportedly in discussions with local partners to establish a massive data center in India with a capacity of at least 1 gigawatt, according to Bloomberg News. The move, if confirmed, would mark one of the company’s most significant infrastructure investments in Asia to date.

The report suggests that this initiative could be part of OpenAI’s broader Stargate project, a multi-billion-dollar effort to build next-generation AI infrastructure. “The plan to build a large new data center could mark a major step forward in Asia for OpenAI’s Stargate-branded artificial intelligence infrastructure push,” Bloomberg News reported.

While Reuters could not immediately verify the report, the development aligns with OpenAI’s ongoing expansion plans in India. The company recently registered as a legal entity in the country and is in the process of assembling a local team. In August, OpenAI announced its intention to open its first India office in New Delhi later this year, solidifying its presence in what is now its second-largest market by user base.

The location and timeline of the proposed facility are yet to be disclosed, though Bloomberg added that CEO Sam Altman may announce the project during his visit to India in September.

The Stargate initiative, unveiled earlier this year, is backed by a private sector investment of up to $500 billion, supported by SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle. U.S. President Donald Trump formally announced the program in January, calling it a landmark step toward advancing global AI infrastructure.

If completed, the data center would not only enhance OpenAI’s computing capabilities but also provide India with a significant role in the global AI ecosystem — potentially improving latency, scaling model training, and enabling faster deployment of AI applications for enterprises and developers in the region.
