OpenAI has rolled out a mobile and desktop application for its AI coding assistant, Codex, as part of its strategy to boost its position against competitors in the growing market for AI code-generation tools.
The company said the Codex app has been designed to let users handle several artificial-intelligence agents at once over extended periods, making it straightforward to run long-running tasks. Officials told reporters that the app can also use generated code to gather and analyze information.
Coding has emerged as one of the most successful applications of AI models in recent years, and tools that automate code generation have become key for AI startups that attract commercial customers.
Despite OpenAI’s prominence in generative AI, it currently trails some rivals in the coding space, particularly the AI startup Anthropic. Its Claude Code tool, according to Anthropic, reached $1 billion in revenue on an annualized basis within six months of its public release.
The Codex app, which was released on Monday, reflects OpenAI’s renewed efforts to narrow that gap. The company said the app is also intended to be more user-friendly to make these advanced capabilities accessible to a broader audience.
Many industry observers say that, while current code-generation tools cannot fully replace human software engineers, they can significantly speed up developers’ work.
“The models just don’t run out of dopamine,” CEO Sam Altman said, recounting a recent conversation with a colleague. “They keep trying, they don’t run out of motivation.”
