Perplexity AI, the fast-rising artificial intelligence-powered search engine startup, has acquired the premium domain OS.AI from Dharmesh Shah, the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer of HubSpot. The development was publicly confirmed by Shah on LinkedIn, where he shared:
“I have sold the domain os.ai to Perplexity. I was already a shareholder in Perplexity before (I love the product, as do millions of others). Now I’m a somewhat larger shareholder.”
The domain os.ai now redirects users to Comet, which is Perplexity’s newly introduced agentic web browser—a product designed to integrate advanced AI models directly into the browsing experience. This move signals a broader and more ambitious roadmap for Perplexity, which may include building a full-fledged operating system for the artificial intelligence era.
Shah, a prominent voice in the AI and startup ecosystem, has long advocated for AI-native platforms and digital infrastructures purpose-built for this transformative technology wave. On the significance of the domain and Perplexity’s trajectory, he remarked:
“It makes complete sense for an OS for AI to exist. Every big technology shift brings a new kind of OS.”
Perplexity’s Chief Executive Officer Aravind Srinivas also shared the development earlier, reinforcing the company’s vision of enabling AI-first workflows that transcend traditional search functions. The redirection of os.ai to Comet underscores Perplexity’s belief that AI will become increasingly agentic, meaning users will interact with intelligent agents capable of performing tasks, navigating the web, and making informed decisions with minimal human input.
This is not Shah’s first major domain transaction in the AI space. In 2023, he sold chat.com to OpenAI in a landmark deal that was widely speculated to be valued at over $15 million, underscoring the growing strategic importance of premium domains in the AI arms race.
The acquisition of os.ai not only strengthens Perplexity’s brand and product narrative but also positions it as a potential frontrunner in creating the infrastructure for AI-native experiences—a future where operating systems are deeply integrated with intelligent agents, personalized automation, and contextual computing.
As the AI ecosystem continues to evolve, the move reflects a broader trend among technology companies to redefine foundational software layers—from browsers to operating systems—to harness the full potential of artificial intelligence.
