Reddit is expanding the global footprint of its AI-powered search experience, introducing support for five new languages — French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese. The rollout makes the feature available to users in countries such as Brazil, France, Germany, Spain, Mexico, and Italy, marking a major step in Reddit’s efforts to make its AI-driven capabilities more accessible worldwide.
Users who have set one of these languages as their default can now interact with Reddit’s AI through a question-and-answer chat interface, receiving conversational, context-rich responses tailored to their language settings. The company confirmed that it uses a Google AI model to power this functionality.
Reddit first introduced its AI-powered search in 2023, integrating it into the broader Reddit Answers ecosystem, which exists alongside the platform’s traditional keyword-based search. The feature helps users find more relevant information across Reddit’s vast network of communities by understanding natural language queries and summarizing discussions from multiple threads.
According to Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, “Reddit search has more than 70 million weekly users, while Reddit Answers is used by more than 6 million people.” Huffman also mentioned during the company’s August earnings call that Reddit plans to unify its search systems, creating a more seamless experience between traditional and AI-enhanced tools.
The move aligns with a broader industry shift toward AI-driven, conversational search interfaces, a trend popularized by platforms like ChatGPT, which integrated web search capabilities earlier this year. Major players such as Google and Brave have followed suit by enhancing their own search engines with generative AI tools to increase engagement and improve retention. Meanwhile, emerging startups like Perplexity AI are gaining traction with chat-based search formats that deliver concise, contextualized answers rather than lists of links.
By extending its AI-powered search to more languages, Reddit is positioning itself as a global player in the evolving search landscape, bridging community-generated insights with AI-driven comprehension.
