Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited has appointed Sanjay Khanna as its Chairman and Managing Director, marking a key leadership transition at one of India’s largest state-owned energy companies. The appointment has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet and comes into effect from April 2026.
Khanna takes over the role after previously serving as Director (Refineries) at BPCL and holding the additional charge of Chairman and Managing Director following the retirement of his predecessor in April 2025. His appointment ensures continuity in leadership as the company advances its long-term growth and energy transition strategies.
With over three decades of experience in refinery operations and technical services, Khanna brings deep industry expertise to the position. During his tenure at BPCL, he has led several critical projects, including the development of new process units across refineries in Mumbai, Kochi, and Numaligarh, and has also headed the Kochi and Mumbai refineries.
Academically, Khanna is a chemical engineering graduate from the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, and holds a postgraduate qualification in finance management from the University of Mumbai. His leadership has also extended to commissioning key initiatives such as the Propylene Derivative Petrochemical Project, further strengthening BPCL’s petrochemical capabilities.
His tenure as Chairman and Managing Director will continue until his superannuation on May 31, 2029, or until further orders. As BPCL continues to invest in large-scale projects and expand its footprint in refining and petrochemicals, Khanna’s appointment is expected to support the company’s strategic focus on operational efficiency, value-added products, and long-term energy security.
