Elon Musk’s Starlink has joined hands with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) to roll out Aadhaar-based e-KYC for satellite internet services, enabling faster, paperless, and secure customer onboarding. The partnership is set to make Starlink’s high-speed satellite internet more accessible for homes, enterprises, and institutions across India, marking a significant leap in digital connectivity.
According to the Ministry of Electronics & IT, the collaboration highlights the robustness and scalability of India’s digital public infrastructure. “This move demonstrates the scalability and reliability of India’s digital infrastructure, as a global satellite communications giant integrates seamlessly with Aadhaar’s trusted ecosystem,” the ministry said in a statement. Customers will now benefit from instant identity verification, complete compliance with Indian regulations, and a frictionless sign-up experience that eliminates traditional paperwork.
The initiative also reinforces India’s position as a global leader in digital identity systems. With Starlink gaining official recognition as both a Sub-Authentication User Agency (Sub-AUA) and a Sub-eKYC User Agency (Sub-KUA), UIDAI’s involvement in the launch underscored its commitment to maintaining transparency, accountability, and innovation-driven governance.
Through Aadhaar authentication, Starlink is expected to streamline connectivity by reducing onboarding delays and ensuring secure access for millions of potential users. This step not only aligns with the Indian government’s digital transformation agenda but also strengthens regulatory oversight in the fast-growing satellite broadband sector.
Industry experts note that the move could accelerate satellite internet adoption in remote and underserved regions of India, where traditional broadband infrastructure has struggled to expand. By integrating Aadhaar’s secure identity verification framework, Starlink can scale operations quickly while ensuring compliance with India’s stringent telecom and cybersecurity regulations.
In essence, the Starlink-UIDAI collaboration reflects the growing global relevance of India’s digital public infrastructure. It highlights how innovations like Aadhaar authentication are enabling new-age technologies to be deployed at scale, while maintaining trust and accountability.
“By embracing Aadhaar authentication, Starlink is not only streamlining connectivity but also reinforcing how India’s digital public infrastructure can enable cutting-edge technology adoption at scale,” the official statement added.
