Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE), a design, engineering, and project management consultancy under the Tata Group, has announced the acquisition of CDI Engineering Solutions, formerly Comprehensive Designers Inc (CDI). This strategic acquisition marks TCE’s entry into the North American market, bolstering its global capabilities. The financial specifics of the deal have not been disclosed.
Founded in 1950 and headquartered in Houston, CDI brings over 600 employees and an established client base, including several Fortune 500 companies. With eight engineering centers across the US, CDI adds substantial strength to TCE’s global delivery platform, aligning with the company’s mission to address global challenges such as clean energy transition, decarbonization, and resilient infrastructure.
TCE emphasized that the acquisition is a calculated move to expand its international reach and enhance its engineering expertise. “This deliberate step is aimed at scaling TCE’s global footprint and expertise,” the company said in a statement. It further highlighted that CDI’s capabilities complement TCE’s core strengths in engineering design and project management, offering integrated solutions to diverse industries.
Amit Sharma, Managing Director and CEO of TCE, expressed optimism about the future of the combined entity, calling it a “competitive force” equipped to deliver exceptional value to clients while addressing critical global priorities like energy transition and sustainable infrastructure. Similarly, CDI President Steve Karlovic emphasized the shared commitment to engineering excellence and sustainability, viewing the acquisition as a growth opportunity for employees and clients alike.
TCE has a long-standing history of engineering excellence. Established in 1962 as Tata Ebasco, a joint venture between Tata Group and US-based Ebasco Services Inc., it became a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Sons in 1968. With over 6,000 employees, TCE reported consolidated revenues of ₹1,406 crore (approximately $170 million USD) in the fiscal year 2024, with India contributing about 60% of its revenues.
The acquisition of CDI represents a significant milestone for TCE, enabling it to leverage CDI’s expertise and infrastructure to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving global market. By integrating CDI’s capabilities, TCE is set to enhance its ability to deliver innovative and sustainable engineering solutions, reinforcing its position as a leader in the industry.
