Tata Group and OpenAI Partner to Build AI Infrastructure and Skills in India

OpenAI has entered into a wide-ranging partnership with India’s Tata Group and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), setting the stage for a significant expansion of AI infrastructure and enterprise adoption in the country. The collaboration spans data centre development, enterprise AI deployment, and large-scale skilling initiatives.

As part of the agreement, OpenAI will become the first customer of TCS’ data centre business, initially securing 100 megawatts of capacity. This engagement is linked to Stargate, a $500 billion multi-year global initiative aimed at building advanced AI data centres to support both model training and inference workloads. Stargate is backed by major investors and represents one of the largest coordinated infrastructure efforts in the AI sector.

The development comes at a pivotal moment for TCS, which last year announced plans to invest up to $7 billion in establishing a 1 gigawatt data centre unit in India. The OpenAI deal provides a strong anchor client as TCS accelerates its ambitions in AI-ready infrastructure.

India has recently witnessed a wave of substantial AI infrastructure investments. Global technology giants such as Google, Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft have been expanding their presence, alongside domestic conglomerates including Reliance Industries and Adani Group.

In parallel with the infrastructure collaboration, Tata Group will roll out ChatGPT Enterprise across its companies over the coming years, beginning with access for hundreds of thousands of employees. OpenAI is the parent company of ChatGPT. All Tata Group employees will have access to Enterprise ChatGPT, while the two companies will provide AI training and resources to Indian youth, enabling them to apply AI responsibly and efficiently at scale. They will develop technology toolkits for NGOs and launch initiatives focused on reaching at least one million Indian youth.

TCS had earlier established HyperVault in 2025 to deliver gigawatt-scale, secure and reliable AI-ready infrastructure designed for hyperscalers and AI-driven enterprises. The new partnership further strengthens that foundation by aligning infrastructure capacity with real-world AI deployment needs.

India has emerged as one of the fastest-growing markets for ChatGPT, with OpenAI stating that the country now has more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users. The collaboration is positioned as a long-term effort to combine infrastructure, enterprise adoption, and skill development to support India’s digital growth.

“Through OpenAI for India and our partnership with the Tata Group, we’re working together to build the infrastructure, skills, and local partnerships needed to build AI with India, for India, and in India, so that more people across the country can access and benefit from it,” said Sam Altman, CEO, OpenAI.

“This deep collaboration between OpenAI and the Tata Group marks a major milestone in India’s vision to become a global leader in AI. We are pleased to partner with OpenAI to create state-of-the-art AI infrastructure in India. This is a unique opportunity for OpenAI and TCS to transform industries. Together we will skill India’s youth and empower them to succeed in the AI era,” said Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman, Tata Sons.

With infrastructure investment, enterprise AI deployment, and nationwide skilling initiatives converging under one framework, the partnership signals a deeper integration of global AI capabilities with India’s industrial and digital ambitions.
