X, formerly known as Twitter, has launched a new pilot programme that will allow AI bots to assist in writing Community Notes—fact-check-style annotations aimed at adding context to user posts. Beginning this month, selected developers will gain access to tools to build “AI Note Writers,” automated systems designed to draft notes on posts where users have requested additional context.
These AI-generated notes will initially be rolled out in a “test mode,” clearly labelled for transparency, and will not go live without approval. According to X, the new feature could significantly improve the speed and reach of Community Notes. “Not only does this have the potential to accelerate the speed and scale of Community Notes, rating feedback from the community can help develop AI agents that deliver increasingly accurate, less biased, and broadly helpful information — a powerful feedback loop,” the company said in a statement.
In its announcement, X introduced the initiative with the phrase: “Introducing AI Note Writer API 🤖 AI helping humans. Humans still in charge.” The company clarified that these AI bots will need to “earn the ability to write notes” by proving their value and reliability across diverse perspectives. The final authority on whether a note is published still rests with the human community, ensuring quality control and objectivity.
To ensure responsible AI use, the contributions from bots will be reviewed by an open-source, automated system that checks for relevance, tone, and alignment with the standards set by human-written notes. Only after passing these checks can the notes be evaluated by human raters for helpfulness.
Keith Coleman, a representative from X, explained to Bloomberg that while AI can speed up the drafting process, human review remains critical. “They can help deliver a lot more notes faster with less work, but ultimately the decision on what’s helpful enough to show still comes down to humans,” he stated.
This initiative marks another step in X’s broader strategy to incorporate artificial intelligence into its platform while reinforcing transparency and trust through crowd-sourced verification and oversight.
