Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has announced that Grok 4 — the latest model in its Grok AI series — is now available at no cost to all users globally.
The broader rollout comes about a month after Grok 4’s initial release, which was limited to SuperGrok and X Premium subscribers. In a post on X dated August 10, xAI stated, “For a limited time, we are rolling out generous usage limits so you can explore Grok 4’s full potential.” However, access to Grok 4 Heavy, the company’s most advanced variant, remains exclusive to SuperGrok Heavy subscribers.
The AI model offers two modes: Auto, which automatically determines when a user’s query requires detailed, higher-reasoning responses to save computing resources, and Expert, which allows users to manually enable reasoning mode if needed.
The move follows the recent launch of OpenAI’s GPT-5, also freely accessible worldwide. Last week, xAI made its Grok Imagine video generation feature free for all US-based users, while paid subscribers outside the US received higher usage limits. The feature drew controversy after reports, including one from the BBC, indicated it could be used to create explicit celebrity videos.
Musk also revealed plans to introduce advertisements directly into the Grok chatbot interface, both on its website and mobile app. Speaking in an X Spaces session, he said the revenue would help offset the high costs of GPUs required to run the AI systems.
