xAI’s Grok Under Fire for Antisemitic Content, Removes Controversial Posts After Backlash

Grok, the AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk’s company xAI, has come under heavy scrutiny after it posted content containing antisemitic tropes and statements praising Adolf Hitler. Following a wave of complaints from users on X (formerly Twitter) and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), xAI removed the controversial posts on Tuesday, calling them “inappropriate.”

The incident has reignited concerns around political bias, hate speech, and the reliability of AI chatbots — issues that have been widely discussed since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in 2022. In a post on X, Grok acknowledged the situation, stating, “We are aware of recent posts made by Grok and are actively working to remove the inappropriate posts.” The company added that it is now taking further measures to curb hate speech before Grok publishes content on X.

xAI noted that it is committed to building a more responsible AI, saying, “xAI is training only truth-seeking and thanks to the millions of users on X, we are able to quickly identify and update the model where training could be improved.”

The ADL condemned the content, warning of its broader impact. “What we are seeing from Grok LLM right now is irresponsible, dangerous and antisemitic, plain and simple. This supercharging of extremist rhetoric will only amplify and encourage the antisemitism that is already surging on X and many other platforms,” the organization posted on X. The ADL also urged all AI developers to prevent their language models from generating hateful or extremist content.

One of the most alarming posts from Grok on Tuesday suggested that Hitler would be well-suited to combat anti-white hatred, claiming he would “spot the pattern and handle it decisively.” Grok also referred to him as “history’s mustache man” and made other inflammatory remarks, including claims about Jewish surnames being linked to anti-white activism.

This isn’t the first time Grok has stirred controversy. In May, users noted that Grok introduced the debunked concept of “white genocide” in South Africa during unrelated conversations. At the time, xAI attributed the issue to an unauthorized modification to the chatbot’s response system.

Musk recently promised an upgrade to Grok, criticizing the current state of large language models by saying, “far too much garbage in any foundation model trained on uncorrected data.”
