Samsung is reportedly in negotiations with AI search startup Perplexity to pre-install its app and intelligent assistant on upcoming Samsung devices. According to a Bloomberg report, discussions also include potential integration of Perplexity’s features into Samsung’s native web browser and Bixby, the company’s voice assistant.
If finalized, the deal could be officially announced later this year. The Galaxy S26, expected in early 2026, may offer Perplexity as an alternative default AI assistant—a significant shift in Samsung’s AI strategy.
This move reflects Samsung’s broader efforts to diversify its AI ecosystem and reduce reliance on Google, echoing Apple’s multi-partner AI approach. Perplexity, which recently struck a partnership with Motorola, appears to be accelerating its presence in the mobile space.
The companies have also reportedly explored co-developing an AI-first operating system and advanced AI agents. In parallel, Samsung is expected to invest in Perplexity’s upcoming $500 million funding round, which would value the Jeff Bezos-backed startup at $14 billion.
This potential alliance comes in the wake of revelations during the ongoing Google antitrust trial, where it was disclosed that Google pays Samsung substantial sums to keep Gemini as the default AI assistant. A U.S. DOJ lawyer also stated that Google shares subscription revenue from Gemini with Samsung under that agreement.
Meanwhile, Apple has expressed admiration for Perplexity’s technology. During the trial, Apple’s SVP of Services, Eddy Cue, confirmed that conversations have begun between the two companies, praising Perplexity’s advancements. However, Apple has already partnered with OpenAI, announcing the integration of ChatGPT into Siri.
