OpenAI is enhancing ChatGPT with a set of mental health-focused features aimed at promoting healthier and more responsible usage. These updates come as the company prepares for the anticipated launch of GPT-5 and a potential new, lower-cost subscription option.
One of the key additions is the introduction of gentle usage reminders, which prompt users to take breaks during extended sessions with the chatbot. According to OpenAI, the intent is not to increase screen time but to encourage mindful interaction. “We build ChatGPT to help you thrive in all the ways you want. To make progress, learn something new, or solve a problem, and then get back to your life,” the company stated.
ChatGPT is also being trained to respond differently to sensitive or emotionally charged questions, such as those involving personal relationships or major life decisions. Rather than offering simple answers, the chatbot will guide users through their thoughts by presenting balanced perspectives and helping them evaluate their choices calmly and thoughtfully.
These changes are part of OpenAI’s broader effort to prevent the misuse of AI for emotional support or as a substitute for professional mental health care. The company is currently refining how ChatGPT detects potential signs of emotional distress. The goal is to avoid encouraging negative behaviors or over-reliance, and instead point users toward credible resources or professional help when appropriate.
To develop these features, OpenAI collaborated with over 90 medical professionals across 30 countries and consulted researchers in human-computer interaction to improve the chatbot’s tone and behavior during extended and personal exchanges.
Meanwhile, OpenAI is gearing up for the launch of GPT-5, described as the company’s most powerful AI model to date. CEO Sam Altman recently said that testing the model made him feel “nervous,” likening its potential impact to that of the Manhattan Project. This next-generation model could mark a major leap forward in AI capabilities.
Alongside GPT-5, OpenAI may introduce a new budget-friendly subscription tier called ‘Go’, which would be cheaper than the current $20/month Plus plan. Though not officially confirmed, this new plan was discovered in the app’s backend code.
Additionally, the company is experimenting with features like chat pinning and saving favourites to enhance usability on the web platform, indicating ongoing improvements beyond just the model itself.
