eBay has officially inaugurated its first Global Capability Centre (GCC) in India, a 65,000 sq. ft. facility in Bengaluru designed to accommodate over 300 engineers. The new centre is envisioned as a tier-1 global technology hub, focusing on advanced areas such as AI/ML, applied research, engineering, product development, and data analytics. Unlike traditional support operations, the GCC will play a strategic innovation role within eBay’s global ecosystem. The inauguration was led by Dr. Ekroop Caur, Secretary of Electronics, IT, Bt and S&T, GoK, and Secretary of Skill Development, Entrepreneurship, and Livelihood Development.
Explaining the rationale behind choosing Bengaluru, Mazen Rawashdeh, SVP & CTO at eBay, said, “The talent in India, in general, is amazing. We were debating between Bengaluru and Hyderabad, and we decided on Bengaluru as the quality and diversity of the talent is really attractive here. We want to open and expand our presence with the dev centre and attract top talent. It’s a world-class tier-1 tech dev centre for us.”
Rawashdeh further highlighted that this new GCC marks a “180-degree shift” from eBay’s earlier operations in India. Unlike its previous stint, which primarily handled support for external functions, the Bengaluru centre will incubate, architect, and build services across engineering, design, and product innovation — strengthening eBay’s global product capabilities.
Beyond internal operations, eBay is also looking to build strong academic and government collaborations. The company intends to partner with universities and research institutions to create robust R&D pipelines, especially by engaging with PhD students and researchers. “We intend to build those relationships… that would be a great pipeline to not only bring talent to the organization, but also leverage the tremendous knowledge and experience,” Rawashdeh added.
