Google’s Gemini, xAI’s Grok, and Meta AI Gain Ground as ChatGPT Faces Rising Competition

ChatGPT remains the leading AI app globally, but rivals like Google’s Gemini, xAI’s Grok, and Meta AI are quickly narrowing the gap, according to the latest consumer AI report from venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. Now in its fifth edition, the report draws on more than two years of data to track how people are adopting AI tools across different use cases, from productivity and creativity to companionship and entertainment.

For the fifth consecutive time, 14 companies appeared on the list of top AI products. These include ChatGPT, Perplexity, Poe, Character AI, Midjourney, Leonardo, Veed, Cutout, ElevenLabs, Photoroom, Gamma, QuillBot, Civitai, and Hugging Face — reflecting the wide range of ways consumers are interacting with AI, from chatbots and image editing to voice generation and model hosting.

Google made its strongest showing yet, with Gemini emerging as the No. 2 app both on mobile and the web, trailing ChatGPT but with nearly half as many monthly active users. Gemini’s adoption skews heavily toward Android, where it accounts for almost 90% of its mobile base. Other Google entries also climbed into the rankings: AI Studio entered the top 10 for web-based AI tools, NotebookLM landed at No. 13, and Google Labs ranked No. 39.

xAI’s Grok showed rapid momentum, coming in fourth on the web and No. 23 on mobile, buoyed by the release of Grok 4 in July 2025, which drove usage up nearly 40%. Meta AI, meanwhile, held at No. 46 on the web but did not make the mobile list, hindered by backlash over reports that it publicly shared users’ posts without clear consent.

Chinese AI firms also had a strong presence. Alibaba’s Quark ranked No. 9 on the web, ByteDance’s Doubao hit No. 12 (and No. 4 on mobile), and Moonshot AI’s Kimi placed No. 17. Overall, 22 of the top 50 mobile AI apps were developed in China, with many expanding globally beyond their home market.

The report also highlighted fresh entrants like Replit and Lovable, which cracked the list for the first time, and noted that both app stores are now more actively filtering out ChatGPT clones, creating room for new players.

Andreessen Horowitz pointed out that competition in AI apps is becoming more dynamic, with rising stars such as PixAI, Bolt, and Talkie on the verge of breaking into the top rankings.
