OpenAI Strengthens AI Cloud Capabilities with Acqui-Hire of Convogo Founders

OpenAI has begun the new year by completing its ninth acqui-hire in the past 12 months, bringing the founding team of leadership software startup Convogo into its AI Cloud organization. As part of an all-stock deal, Convogo co-founders Matt Cooper, Evan Cater, and Mike G. will join OpenAI to help design, build, and scale next-generation AI infrastructure and cloud-native experiences, reinforcing the company’s long-term focus on expanding its AI cloud capabilities.

Unlike a traditional acquisition, OpenAI is not absorbing Convogo’s product or intellectual property. Instead, the move is squarely centered on talent and expertise. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed that the transaction is a strategic decision aimed at accelerating the company’s “AI cloud efforts,” underscoring its emphasis on hiring teams with deep operational and applied AI experience. As a result of this acqui-hire, Convogo’s existing product will be phased out.

Convogo originated as a weekend hackathon experiment, driven by a simple but ambitious question: could artificial intelligence automate the time-intensive process of leadership assessment reporting? Over the past two years, that experiment evolved into a platform used by thousands of executive coaches and adopted through partnerships with prominent leadership development firms. Along the way, the founders gained hands-on insight into how AI performs in real-world professional settings, beyond theoretical or experimental use cases.

Through this journey, the Convogo team identified a broader challenge facing the AI industry—how to translate increasingly powerful models into outcomes that are practical, intuitive, and valuable for everyday users. Reflecting on this realization, the founders shared their perspective, stating, “We’re convinced now more than ever that the key to bridging that gap lies in thoughtful, purpose-built experiences.”

By joining OpenAI, the Convogo founders aim to continue pursuing this mission at a much larger scale, contributing to the development of infrastructure and experiences that make advanced AI more usable across industries. The acqui-hire aligns with OpenAI’s broader strategy of selectively bringing in high-caliber teams to deepen its technical bench, accelerate innovation, and deliver transformative AI-powered workflows. As competition in AI infrastructure intensifies, this move highlights OpenAI’s continued investment in talent as a critical driver of long-term growth and impact.
